use loads of colours and pictures, just short words in markers for description. cut and paste from magazines – pictures of instruments or whatever’s going on in his life – e.g. he went deaf so you could get a nice huge picture of an ear and cross it out.
as for the time line itself, it could be straight for the ‘normal’ parts of his life and rocky, like staggering, short and long jagged lines (think heart failure in a hospital’s ECG!) for the parts when he was having a rough time.
