Lets Talk About Classical Music

Classical Music

It can be pretty easy for somebody to have it easy and enjoy performing and experimenting with the music genre they love behind some turntables. Changing the face of a style or genre and becoming a trend-setter and being a masterful innovator instead of being someone who follows the crowds. Detroiter Jeff Mills is someone who has gained massive influence and respect throughout the years that he has been performing to audiences around the usa and around the world.

If you look to Mills’ biography, you can see that his promising career began when he became one of the better parts of nightly show on one of the radio channels within his state. Mills would stand-out from the crowd through using DJing techniques such as juggling beats live – something which can be difficult to perfect in the heat of the moment. Even better, he was not afraid to stay true to himself by playing some of the techno and wave music which was local to the area – making an exciting twist on the musical origins of the area in which he was brought up. Detroit techno, when combined with other localised genres that included Miami bass, really resulted in an entirely individualised and obscure sound which broke frontiers and hadn’t been played out before.

Having the skills to play a unique and authentic set is one thing, but Mills has been recognised as somebody who has a talent when handling turntables and equipment – having three decks to use when he performs. If you were to buy his music, you would find the tracks which are normally blended in and mixed with other sounds and releases to create the sets which he has become famous for.

The ambition that Mills has always displayed for techno music on the whole certainly cant be denied – his technical ability, finesse and the end result were astounding. What has always made Mills stand out from the crowd though was the Detroit Techno record label axis records which he created in conjunction with the new mixes he was creating. The techno feel to his tracks was still there, but one of the fundamental differences was how the releases were a lot more minmalistic than others styles and in some respects, almost progenitors of the current trends in minimal techno and house.

Jeff Mills tells a story – with his latest releases forming a story which can be left open to interpretation for the listener to bring in their thoughts. One of the side notes on his record label’s website, Axis, even asks listeners to bear in mind that ‘the Universe isn’t just ours. Things are happening around us all the time which are without human logic’.

It is definitely exciting, refreshing and without doubt curious to listen to Jeff Mills’ records. It is techno with even more of a story than usual – it evokes thought and explores a more digital and an almost purely electronic sound that lets the listener come to their own conclusions. Mills is capturing the beauty of music by letting listeners explore the musics inherant meaning for themselves without having it spelled out to them.
