I’ve always enjoyed listening to classical music, but I’d like to actually get a grasp of the music so I can understand what I’m listening to. Any tips?

Fillip If you go on Youtube there are some different tunes played with the harmonica in classical music. I was wondering if this can be done with any harmonica or do certain types lend themselves better to certain types of music? Thanks.Home Theater Systems

First of all, I’m very glad that you not only enjoy classical music, but are willing to put forth the effort to grasp and understand it. Good for you!

I’d start by researching the basic periods of “classical” music: you know, medieval, renaissance, baroque, classical, romantic, contemporary. Granted, there are several subgroups in the aforementioned, but just starting with those will help. Read about the major composers, styles of music, and techniques of each era (A wonderful book that I’ve found is The Encyclopedia of Music by Max Wade-Matthews and Wendy Thompson. This encyclopedia describes each era of music, gives several detailed descriptions of the major composers of each and also has a section on musical instruments and theory. It’s a very nifty book and I’d recommend it to classical music enthusiasts).

After you’ve learned the distinct styles and contributors of each period, you can start to recognize these styles and composers in your favorite pieces. As though most classical music isn’t interesting enough, researching these background facts can make it all the more fascinating.

    Good luck with your research!

This is a list of 100 well known songs, many of which are credited to the wrong composer. I discovered many great artists from this list.

What I’d reccomend doing is going to your local library and getting a book on classical music. There are several good books out there that will help you. Then, read about the composer and his most famous work, and look it up on YouTube.

I would suggest the symphonies (5, 6, 7, 9), concerti (especially the triple concerto) and some piano sonatas (i like 7 and 8, hate moonlight)
