In this day and age, it is all about standing out, otherwise you will become lost in the sauce of others vying for the same status and position that you are looking to attain. Added to this are the those on a continual seek for the next big thing (preferably already shaped with a built-in audience ready to be simply pushed to the marketplace). This can apply to anything from busienss to playacting or, of course the music industry.
Everyone wants to shine and be the ‘man’ or ‘woman’ who is adored by all, with people coming up wanting to emulate them and their successes. But how do you stand out from the crowd and use your publicity to ensure you are not swallowed up as another faceless unknown?
Unless you are an already established name with your own distinct style it can be tricky to launch yourself amid those who are quick to knock those deemed fake or seen to be copying another. You need to have something fresh, original and unmistakeably yours. A product, if you will, even if that product is your own self. Of course everyone takes influences from elsewhere, but to get some real legendary status (and the money that can accompany it) the only way is to have your own distinct style or twist.
The real trick is to become associated with something so closely that when people see that style they reckon of you – to become synonymous with your brand. Think of the Nike Swoosh for example – it doesn’t matter where you see it – your mind directly recognizes the brand.
However, having that brand is not always enough – you then need to let people know about it. An electronic press kit is one easy and reasonably priced way to get your name out to the masses. Especially as it allows you to use the cyberspace to produce and distribute your brand quickly. A decent publicist can also be of help – although there is much you can do on your own (at least until you need or can afford the services of a professional). You can, for example, use an intermediate service to tide you over and create and send your own EPK. It’s certainly better than letting soemone take your ideas before you get a chance to put them out to the public.
Innovate and you can become more than just another name walking the same route as a hundred others.
